Overview: Hike Picos de Europa

The ultimate “off the beaten path” hiking adventure!

The geography of Asturias appears to be a geological explosion towards the sky. Above all, it is a vertical land of imposing mountains, where rivers flowing towards the sea have chiseled deep ravines and beautiful river valleys. Then there is the seacoast, more than three hundred kilometers (around 190 miles) of irregular coastline offering a succession of about one hundred beaches of fine sand.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Santander

You will be met by your Spain Adventures specialist and taken by shuttle to Santillana del Mar a village founded in the Middle Ages by a group of monks who came from Asia Minor. Once we have explored the village, we will visit the spectacular Cueva de Altamira. This 10,000 year old cave is famous for its engravings of animals on rock. Tonight, our accommodations are in an 18th century Manor Home situated along the river Deba and whose kitchen is known as the very best in region.

Day 2 & 3

Our day begins with a ride on a teleférico (cable car), which will take us to the Mirador del Cable Pembles. From the overlook we will then begin our descent until we reach the town of Pembles. Along the way we stop to visit the 6th Century Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana.

Day 4 & 5

This morning we walk the Cares River passing by roman bridges and taking in the views. The next day is for you to explore the many shops that sell all the local delicacies, from cider to white beans you will find it all in town. It’s a good day to kayak or go horseback riding along the river Sella.

Day 6 & 7

On our way to the summit, we stop at the basilica of Covadonga and then continue to the pristine lakes surrounded by wildflowers. The next day our guided tour takes us through the capital of Asturias, Oviedo where we stop to see the monuments and the Gothic Cathedral. Outside the city we’ll visit the Caves of Bustillo to see prehistoric art.

Day 8: Departures

Asturias offers so much to see and do that you might opt for our extension!
Our shuttle takes us to Somiedo in the heart of the Parque Natural where we prepare for our climb the next day.

Day 9: Start of extended tour

This moderate climb will take us along the Pradera del Valle, which will take us to the lake of the same name. The path is narrow and the views spectacular. We return to Somiedo where we feast on the specialty of the region La fabada.

Day 10

We continue our journey through Somiedo on our Picos de Europa tour climbing along narrow, natural paths carved into rocky hillside until we reach open, green pastures. This afternoon offers us a change of scenery when we head for the coast. White rocky beaches where low tide reveals incredibly white sand. The river Eo flows right into the picturesque town of Ribadeo, where our accommodations tonight are in a restored Galecian Mansion which offers delectable local gastronomy, the pride of the region.

Day 11

An early departure for return to the mountains, where we return to green pastures, lush valleys, and the tiny villages with houses whose roofs are made with the indigenous slate so typical of Asturias. An easy day for us as we pass through quaint, small hamlets.

Day 12

Morning guided visits to waterfalls, and the museum of the Molinos where you’ll witness the first methods by which the Celts, Romans, Africans, and Chinese made knives and milled wheat. The afternoon is yours to wander through this charming town, explore and shop for treasures that will forever remind you of this Spain adventure.

Day 13

This morning, our scenic route takes us to Santiago de Compostela Mankind’s Heritage City. Encircled by the river Sar and its tributary the river Sarela, Santiago de Compostela is situated in the northeast of Spain in the province of Galicia. The city of the Apostle St. James is a city of sights and the best thing is to explore its streets (known by the Galcian term rúa, rather than by the Spainsh word, calle), squares and hidden corners before succumbing to the delights of Gallego cuisine. You have a guided tour of the Cathedral this afternoon followed by our farewell feast in celebration of an adventure to remember.
